Maniacal Monsters

Andy Hopp

A young man in a toad suit sitting at a dinner table.
A large rock giant covered in grass lumbers along.
A large, baggy green monster clutching a woman in one arm.

Disturbing. Twisted. Macabre. All appropriate words to describe the creatures, critters, and characters of Andy Hopp. Malformed floating blobs, strange collisions of familiar creatures, and malevolent hulking beasts populate his peculiar world. These figures are always startling, usually hostile, but often evoke a savage, utilitarian beauty in spite of their asymmetrical features.

Equally strange is his technique: a fevered collection of scratchy ink lines, that come together to form jagged, monochrome portraits of immense texture and depth. These creations are certainly monsters, and some clearly enjoy the mayhem and death they bring, others seem merely resigned to their chaotic fate. Perhaps they wander the land, searching for a greater purpose.

Who knows? they just might find it.
