The BBC reports that a small group of SF experts from across the pond have picked Hal 9000’s descent into madness as the top moment science fiction history. This “moment” slowly developed during the course of 2001: A Space Odyssey — due to the stress caused by his orders to lie to the crew — but it certainly struck a nerve. Scientists Choose Top SF Movies
Scotsman.com reports that sixty of the world’s top scientists have chosen Bladerunner as their favorite science fiction movie. 2001: A Space Odyssey came in right behind, with the original Star Wars movies coming in next. I saw the remake of Solaris — their next fave — with George Clooney and only just liked it. Do I really have to watch the older, longer version too?

Vulcan, Elfin, or Just Plain Evil?
Just to show that the western world doesn’t have a lock on obsessive fandom, a young man living in the Nanjing province of China recently underwent cosmetic surgery to obtain “alien-like pointy ears.”
The Ananova article assumes he wanted to look like Mr. Spock, but he could have just as easily been shooting for a Romulan, an Elf, or perhaps Mr. Spock’s supposed inspiration: the Devil himself.
